Carson Wentz’s coach compared the rookie QB to Peyton Manning in one way

Peyton Manning has been out of the NFL less than a year, and already his replacement apparently already has arrived. We’re only sort of kidding.

(No, not Trevor Siemian, although he’s good too.)

It was shocking Monday morning to hear Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson compare Carson Wentz and the future Hall of Fame quarterback at least in one way.

Pederson said that Wentz’s preparation and obsession with film study was “Peyton Manning-ish,” which, if you think about it, is about as high a compliment as a rookie QB can get. Don’t believe Pederson? Well, Wentz’s girlfriend did once catch him watching game film under the dinner table while they were out on a date. That’s pretty obsessive.

Wentz reportedly was watching game tape early before the Eagles’ destruction of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday and back doing the same Monday. That’s a good work ethic, we’d say. Is there a new sheriff in town?

This story has been remarkable in the early stages, which is wild considering few fans knew him as recently as January. Even for those who knew his impressive resumé entering the draft, it was unclear how ready Wentz would be — even as mature and studious as he was reported to be — coming from North Dakota State. But the Eagles were convinced, made a bold trade up in the draft to secure him and then traded Sam Bradford a week before the season.

All that film study is paying off, apparently. The Eagles are 3-0 (with no turnovers, which is a rare thing) and Wentz has looked fantastic in the process.

They’ve got a bye this week, which we thought was going to result in a little brake pumping on the Wentzylvania Mania. But now that his coach has invoked Manning’s name, all bets are officially off on that.
