Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid won his team’s game against the Florida Panthers in overtime with a gorgeous last-second breakaway goal that was initially reviewed to determine whether it counted.

When McDavid shot the puck, Panthers goaltender James Reimer caught it, but his glove was behind the goal line. The original call on the ice was a goal and a video review confirmed that this was indeed the case.

“I thought it went in just because (Reimer) was already in his net, basically,” McDavid said. “The refs did a good job and the guys back in Toronto doing the video (review) did a good job to find a clear shot of it.”

The NHL also tweeted out a view of the camera in the goal net that showed the puck had crossed the line. The final score of the game was 4-3 and the goal came with 2.6 seconds left in the extra session.

“I don’t think any goalie will agree with that call,” Reimer said. “Obviously he’s a good player, and I think 20,000 people thought it went in and I knew I had it in my glove. I didn’t know if it crossed the line or not, but when I saw the replay I thought they might call it our way, but it was not the way the refs saw it, so you just go on with life. I’ll take from it what I feel I can and just move on.”

Panthers coach Tom Rowe said the referee “made the right call as tough as it is.”

The goal was McDavid’s 15th of the season and capped a three-point night for the Oilers’ captain. Edmonton came back from a 3-2 third period deficit to pick up the victory. It was the 20-year-old McDavid’s ninth career game-winning goal, which tied him with Wayne Gretzky for second-most in Oilers history before his age 21 season. Taylor Hall’s 11 goals are the most in team history before the age of 21.

Edmonton now has 57 points, two behind the Anaheim Ducks for first-place in the Pacific Division.
