Joe Flacco misses another practice as status for Sunday gets cloudier

We know that Geno Smith will be starting for the New York Jets against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. We just don’t know who will start at quarterback for the Ravens.

Joe Flacco missed his second straight day of practice Thursday. Perhaps Flacco practices on Friday and is good to go for Sunday, but it’s no sure thing after a second straight missed practice. He has a right shoulder injury.

Quarterbacks rarely miss a full week of practice and then play, though Flacco is a veteran and could do it. But the injury must be pretty significant if it caused the durable Flacco to miss two practices. The injury is to Flacco’s throwing shoulder, which likely complicates the situation. Ryan Mallett would start if Flacco can’t go.

The Ravens haven’t expressed any concern about Flacco’s status for Sunday yet. The only games Flacco has missed in his NFL career came late last season after he tore his ACL.

“I hope the best for him; I hope he’s out there Sunday,” Mallett said, according to the Ravens’ website. “As a competitor, of course I want to play, but I want what’s best for the team.”

Flacco still has a couple days to heal. The Ravens don’t want to try to snap their three-game losing streak without him.
